WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — A man was taken into custody over the weekend after he allegedly tried to carjack someone in Northeast but was stopped by nearby witnesses.
At around 6 p.m. on Aug. 30, D.C. police say someone was sitting in their parked car in the 2000 block of West Virginia Avenue when John Gainey, 51, of Northeast, allegedly assaulted them and pulled them out of the vehicle.

Gainey then sat in the driver’s seat of the car, which was running at the time. However, two people, who saw Gainey assault the driver, pulled him from the car until officers arrived, according to D.C. police.
