Community Rallies Around Student in Intensive Care After Serious Injury at Middle School

A fundraiser has been launched to support the family of the Odessa Shannon Middle School student who was seriously injured on Wednesday, October 22, during a physical education class in Silver Spring. According to his mother, Emily Diaz, the funds will help cover medical expenses and any specialized items her son may need during his recovery.

Diaz shared that her son Lenny sustained a severe open skull injury after being struck in the head by another student. Bone fragments entered his brain, and he remains in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) on a breathing tube as doctors work to stabilize him. She described Lenny as a smart, loving, and adventurous child, and said her family continues to pray for his recovery as doctors assess possible long-term effects involving his speech, mobility, and memory.

In a letter to families, Odessa Shannon Middle School Principal Dr. Natasha H. Booms confirmed that emergency protocols were immediately enacted following the incident.
