Shutdown strains animal shelters across the DMV

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (DC News Now) — As the government shutdown drags on, it’s not just people feeling the strain, so are pets.

Animal shelters across the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia region are seeing a spike in both pet surrenders and pet needs as federal workers face missed paychecks and mounting costs.

“We’re continuing to see a really high intake volume,” said Erin Johnston with the Brandywine SPCA. “We get anywhere from 15 to 20 pets in typically each day. So right now, we are at full capacity.”…
