MPD: Officer fires gun, hitting and killing one person

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said that one person died after an officer was involved in a shooting on Monday evening.

In a press conference, MPD officials said that just before 8 p.m., officers and members of the DC Safe and Beautiful Task Force were patrolling the area around Deanwood Metro station after concerns were brought up during a community meeting Sunday about sounds of gunshots in the area.

MPD said that officers found someone with a firearm tucked in their waistband. The suspect ran away, and officers chased the suspect, giving “multiple loud commands for the suspect to stop.”

An officer caught up with the suspect in the 1200 block of 47th Place, when MPD said a brief struggle took place. Officials said that during this struggle, the officer gave more commands for the suspect to show his hands, but the suspect did not comply and instead reached towards his waistband…
