Wounded West Virginia National Guard soldier transitions to rehab after rapid progress

WASHINGTON — Sixteen days after suffering a critical gunshot wound to the head, Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe of the West Virginia National Guard has made what doctors are calling extraordinary progress in his recovery.

MedStar Washington Hospital Center neurosurgeon Dr. Jeffrey Mai said Wolfe was airlifted to the hospital in life-threatening condition and immediately underwent emergency surgery to control bleeding and reduce pressure on his brain.

“Thanks to the immediate response of emergency personnel and the exceptional care provided by our trauma and neurosurgery teams, he received lifesaving treatment,” Mai said…
