Man to be sentenced for shooting 6-year-old boy at Fourth of July block party

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. — A D.C. man faces up to 60 years in prison after he was convicted of killing 6-year-old Ahsan Payton during a Fourth of July block party in Temple Hills last year. His sentencing is scheduled for Friday afternoon.

Rakeem Gilgeours, 34, was convicted of first-degree assault, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and illegal possession of a firearm back in August.

Ahsan was killed during a shoot-out at a Fourth of July celebration. Prosecutors allege Gilgeours was attending that party. Ahsan was one of three people shot during what police described as an exchange of gunfire. Charging documents say an argument between Gilgeours and an unknown person escalated to the shooting, with Gilgeours firing from the ground into the neighborhood…
