Staffer rang non-emergency line to report stabbing at Wheaton High, resulting in 12-minute hold, police say

A staff member at Wheaton High School spent roughly 12 minutes on hold waiting to report a stabbing on Wednesday because they did not call 911 or a designated emergency communications phone line, according to a statement Thursday evening from Montgomery County police.

According to county police, officers were dispatched to the Silver Spring school at 12401 Dalewood Drive at roughly 1:15 p.m. for the report of a stabbing. A preliminary report found that two boys were involved in an altercation and one, a student at Wheaton High, received a minor hand laceration. The injured student was not transported to a local hospital, police said.

According to a community letter shared with Bethesda Today on Wednesday night by Wheaton High Principal Pamela Krawczel, at roughly 12:45 p.m., a staff member heard a “verbal altercation” in a hallway. When they entered the hallway, the staff member saw a “juvenile with a knife.” Prior to staff intervention, Krawczel said, one Wheaton student suffered a “cut to their hand.” The student was assessed and the injury was “determined to be minor,” Krawczel said…
