MPD Probes Southeast D.C. Fatal Shooting, Offers $25K Reward for Information

The Metropolitan Police Department is knee-deep in an investigation following a fatal shooting incident that unfolded in the Southeast quadrant of D.C. last week. On the last Wednesday of 2025, two men were discovered with gunshot wounds behind a building on 37th Street, as per an MPD announcement. It was approximately 1:02 p.m. when Sixth District officers arrived on the scene in response to the distressing reports of gunfire.

Despite all efforts to quickly respond and to save the victims, the violent encounter claimed the life of one man and left the other fighting for his in a local hospital. The deceased has been named as 31-year-old Darnell Bassett, a resident of Northeast, D.C. MPD has launched a full-scale inquiry into the circumstances leading up to the shooting, calling for anyone with information to step forward.
