Convicted Murderer Sentenced for Carrying Loaded Gun into DC Government Building

Dwayne Taylor, a 49-year-old previously convicted murderer from the District, was handed down a sentence of one year and one day in prison for illegally carrying a loaded revolver into a DC government building. The sentencing occurred yesterday, as reported by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. Taylor pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm and ammunition as a felon before Judge Jia M. Cobb last September, according to the official announcement.

An incident on June 30, 2025, led to an arrest after Metropolitan Police responded to a report of a gun at the Minnesota-Benning Government Center. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro announced the case alongside ATF Washington Field Office Special Agent in Charge Anthony Spotswood and MPD Interim Chief Jeffrey Carroll, highlighting a breach of the facility’s gun-free status and the swift response by law enforcement.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, the encounter began when an officer approached Taylor after security reported a gun in his bag. Taylor immediately admitted, “My weapon in my backpack.” and said he had rushed out that morning and forgotten to leave the gun at home.
