Maryland woman arrested after grocery store confrontation goes viral

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — After video of a confrontation in an Alexandria Giant grocery store went viral on social media, a Maryland woman has been arrested and charged. Alexandria Police say the woman, identified as 34-year-old Shibritney Colbert, could face hate crime charges under the department’s newly-developed hate crime and bias policy.

On Christmas Day, a man shopping at the Giant grocery store located on Duke Street was assaulted by a woman he did not know. Based on the victim’s statement, comments exchanged prior to the assault, and the totality of the circumstances, investigators believe the victim was targeted because of his sexual orientation.

During the incident, Colbert is seen on video pushing the victim and throwing groceries while making derogatory statements. A 911 call reported a fight inside the store. When Alexandria officers arrived, they attempted to detain Colbert in the parking lot, but she left in her car…
