Spite houses in Alexandria, Virginia: A quirky historical tale

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (7News) — Old Town Alexandria is home to four narrow buildings known as spite houses, which are believed to have been built out of personal vendettas versus practicality.

“The idea of a spite house is that you might build a house out of spite,” explained Michael Pope, president of the Alexandria Historical Society. “Maybe you had a dispute with your neighbor that you want to block access to an alleyway.”
