MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — More than 15 years after American University professor Sue Ann Marcum was found murdered in her home, her killer will spend 25 years in prison. Judge Rachel McGuckian handed down the sentence Tuesday.
Jorge Ruedas Landeros was convicted in October after key DNA evidence finally definitively tied him to the scene. Investigators had long focused on Landeros, who was Marcum’s former yoga and Spanish teacher. The two also had romantic and financial relationship. Marcum, 52, invested more than $300,000 into a scheme Landeros was peddling, prosecutors said, and emails between the two showed Marcum was becoming increasingly uneasy about how Landeros was dealing with the money. And Landeros was also the sole beneficiary of a $500,000 life insurance policy in the event of Marcum’s death, though he never attempted to access that money.
