Portion of Metro’s Red Line will be closed for 3 months this summer

WASHINGTON — A portion of Metro’s Red Line will be closed for three months over the summer while several construction projects are underway.

According to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), the major construction will include:

  • Creating a second mezzanine at Bethesda Station to integrate the MTA Purple Line
  • Rehabilitating the platform at Grosvenor-Strathmore by replacing slab edges and tiles, adding new lighting, and modifying drainage
  • Replacing the raised railway across Rockville Pike between Grosvenor-Strathmore and Medical Center

The closures will begin on July 6 and are estimated to last through Sept. 6. During those three months, trains will not operate between North Bethesda and Friendship Heights. Free shuttle buses will be available to replace trains at:

Red Line trains will operate every six minutes in two segments:

  • Between Shady Grove and North Bethesda
  • Between Friendship Heights and Glenmont

WMATA says those taking the shuttles should expect travel time with local stops at North Bethesda, Grosvenor-Strathmore, Medical Center, Bethesda, and Friendship Heights to take around 48 minutes. Rides taking the Express shuttle from North Bethesda to Friendship Heights should expect travel times around 26 minutes…
