This afternoon, under sunny to mostly sunny skies, expect temperatures to soar some 10-20 degrees above normal, as we peak in the 90s. While most folks will not see a drop of rain, there is a slight chance to see a late afternoon or evening thundershower, as a disturbance passes across the DMV later today.
While a passing shower or storm is possible in your neighborhood, the bigger story will be the heat. Right now, the thinking is that Tuesday will be the hottest day of the week and have the greatest chance of tying or breaking a heat record, with highs in the mid to upper 90s east of the Blue Ridge mountains.
By Wednesday, more clouds will roll into the DMV, out ahead of our next significant front, so while the thermometer will still be in the 90s, it looks to be a tick lower compared to Tuesday. The humidity will gradually increase each day, though not to the extent that the National Weather Service would need to issue any heat alerts for the area.
Weather Forecast for DC, Maryland and Virginia
Wednesday afternoon and evening, a powerful cold front will cross the DMV and clear away the multiple days of well-above-average temperatures. Strong to potentially severe may occur, but it is far from a guarantee. If severe weather does develop, any storms are likely to wind down Wednesday night as the cold front eventually settles south of the region by Thursday morning. With winds becoming northerly behind the front on Thursday, temperatures will drop by some 20 degrees, ranging from the upper 60s to the low 70s. That said, those temperatures are much closer to normal for mid to late May. We will end the work week much cooler than we started, before a gradual warm-up is possible over Memorial Day weekend.
