North Penn moves ahead with Department of Public Safety after lengthy debate over school police officers

Board votes 7-2 to continue development of school police program, saying safety plan still requires policies, court approval and community input

The North Penn School Board voted 7-2 to authorize the continued development of a new Department of Public Safety, taking the next step toward establishing certified school police officers throughout the district while emphasizing that significant policy development and community engagement still lies ahead.

Following nearly an hour of board discussion, the June action meeting concluded with directors approving a recommendation authorizing the administration to “take all necessary steps” to reorganize the district’s Office of Emergency Management and Safe Schools into a Department of Public Safety that would include six certified school police officers.
