A 78-year-old Pennsylvania woman was convinced that her identity and Social Security number had been compromised before scammers directed her to turn $683,000 in gold bars over to couriers, prosecutors said.
The scheme targeted the woman, whose name was withheld, at Luther Crest Senior Living in South Whitehall Township, according to Lehigh County District Attorney Gavin P. Holihan.
She was first contacted weeks before police became involved by people claiming to work for “American Bank,” prosecutors said. They told her she needed to transfer her assets to a newly acquired account because her personal information had been compromised…
