The Two Silos in Front of Barn Plaza Will (Probably) Be Torn Down

DOYLESTOWN, PA—It’s official (sort of): When the movie theater in Barn Plaza is torn down to make way for new restaurants and retail stores, the twin silos in front will come down with it.

When preliminary plans for new construction on the site of the movie theater and the Applebee’s on Route 611 and Almshouse Road were announced last month, people on social media were wondering what would happen to the silos in front of the theater. At a zoning meeting last night, the developer for the project confirmed that it plans to bring the silos down.

That led to a discussion of the history of the silos. One zoning board member thought he remembered hearing that the silos couldn’t be torn down if the property was ever redeveloped.

But township Manager Stephanie Mason said that in her research on the matter, she could find nothing that said the silos had to stay. A lawyer for the developer said his team reached a similar conclusion.

While the silos look like they may have been part of the original barn in the Barn Plaza, Mason said they’re relatively recent additions. Newspaper reports say that the silos were added when the old theater was torn down and the current version was built in 1997.
