Phillipsburg High School Unveils Decades of Glory: State Champion Wrestlers Honored

PHILLIPSBURG, NJ – A long time coming, the Phillipsburg Athletic Department and School district unveiled new State Championship banners in the High School gymnasium, on January 27, 2024 during the Phillipsburg vs. Ocean Wrestling dual meet.

With State Champions dating back to 1951, champions are displayed on three banners purchased by the Garnet Booster Club foundation displaying each New Jersey State Champion in Wrestling from Phillipsburg.

With a full recount of each championship, the voice of Phillipsburg Wrestling for decades, Michael Moore, served as the master of ceremonies and courtesy footage of some of the championships were displayed on the screens for reliving the historic victories.

Leave it to the wrestlers to fully rally one another, including Pete Poretta, 1993-1994 State Champion at 112 who ran through the Champions and families like a lineup.

Participating in the event, was the Phillipsburg Honor Guard. Two of the State Championship wrestlers are current Phillipsburg police officers, Tim Moore (1996) and Brandon Hull (2012).
