Bucks County man convicted of first-degree murder in cold case spanning almost 3 decades

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Bucks County man was convicted Thursday of first-degree murder for the killing of a woman in 1991.

A judge ruled Robert Atkins of Falls Township murdered 35-year-old Joy Hibbs in her Bristol Township home. Her son came home from school early to find the house was on fire. Investigators initially thought the fire caused Hibbs’s death but later discovered stab wounds and signs of strangulation on her body.

Cash was also missing from the home. Witnesses placed Atkins’s car at the house on the day of the murder.

Atkins was a person of interest in the case for almost 30 years and was arrested in May of 2022.

Sentencing is expected next week.
