Diane Childs, a 75-year-old retired nurse, recently had a total knee replacement surgery at St. Luke’s Orthopedic Hospital in Allentown. Her left knee pain had become severe, affecting her daily walks. On December 18, she was among the first patients to have the surgery at this new facility. Childs chose St. Luke’s for its reputation in orthopedic medical education and research.
Orthopedic surgeon Patrick Brogle, MD, performed the procedure. He used VELYS robot-assisted technology to replace Childs’ arthritic knee with a metal and plastic joint. The procedure took less than an hour, and the new joint is expected to last 20 years. Dr. Brogle highlighted the precision of the robotic-assisted technology and its role in improving recovery and outcomes.
Dr. Brogle commended Childs for her commitment to recovery. He noted that patients who put in their best effort during all treatment phases often have the best outcomes. Childs is currently undergoing rehabilitation at St. Luke’s in Forks Township. Her physical therapist, Ron Thomas, PT, DPT, is helping her improve her range of motion and strengthen her knee.
