Phillipsburg Mayor Proposes Ordinance to Regulate Commercial Passenger Dropoffs in Response to Social Media Post of Texas Bus in Town

PHILLIPSBURG, NJ – Phillipsburg Mayor Randy Piazza, Jr. recently proposed an ordinance be drafted to prevent passenger vehicles of any kind from dropping people off at various random spots within the town at the April 10, 2024 meeting.

The proposal of this ordinance comes after a series of photos in March were shared in a local Facebook group showing individuals exiting a charter bus with Texas plates and the caption, “It begins.”

“I would like to look into an ordinance finding any commercial passenger dropoff or commercial bus dropoff in unplanned areas to be looked at, if possible,” Piazza shared with his council colleagues.

The series of photos featured five men carrying luggage bags near Stockton and Sitgreaves streets, leaving many residents wondering if they entered the town without inspection. The curiosity stemmed from the charter bus having Texas plates.

Throughout the immigration crisis along the U.S.-Mexico border, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has sent migrants via bus or train from his state to major sanctuary cities, such as Secaucus, Fanwood, Edison, and Trenton, NJ.
