Husband accused of killing wife in Chester County nursing home shooting

EAST COVENTRY, P.A. (KYW Newsradio) — An 89-year-old woman is dead and her 90-year-old husband is in the hospital after police said he shot her in an attempted murder-suicide at the Manatawny Manor retirement home in East Coventry on Thursday morning.

Chester County District Attorney Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe said the man was visiting his wife around 10:45 a.m. when he shot her and then turned the gun on himself.

“It really appears to be a very sad, isolated incident right now,” de Barrena-Sarobe said at a press conference Thursday afternoon.

The district attorney said authorities do not know yet what prompted the shooting and they’re investigating whether criminal charges will be filed.

The 90-year-old man’s condition is also still unknown as he remains in the hospital with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“It’s really early,” said de Barrena-Sarobe. “We can all sort of speculate as to what the circumstances are, but we’re going to continue our investigation.”

Manatawny Manor is providing counseling and support for any employees and residents affected by the shooting.
