The first commemoration of the day took place at 8 a.m. at CB East High School, where hundreds of people packed into the auditorium for the annual Veterans Day ceremony. The event is organized by Operation Eternal Gratitude, a student club that supports veterans and members of the military.
The club regularly assembles and sends care packages to members of the military. Its members also help out by placing wreaths on the graves of veterans and staffing local bridge dedications for veterans who died in the line of duty.
The club’s ceremony on Monday morning saw more than 50 local veterans attend. While the event has been held for more than 20 years, the club’s advisor, CB East math teacher Karen Smith, said this year’s ceremony saw the largest veteran attendance ever.
