DOYLESTOWN, PA—The Central Bucks School District on Tuesday night officially retired one of the last controversial policies of the previous board, this one banning transgender girls from playing in girls’ sports, but officials noted that the change will have no effect on how sports are played in district schools.
Policy 123.3, “Sex-Based Distinctions in Athletics,” was passed in the final weeks of the previous school board’s tenure. It prohibited students from competing on opposite-sex teams and defined sex as based on “reproductive biology and genetic make-up.”

When the old board passed the policy in late 2023, the policy’s supporters argued that they wanted to protect female athletes from having to play against transgender girls who they worried would be bigger and stronger. They worried that transgender girls could have a huge physical advantage over their teammates and that girls playing side-by-side with transgender girls could end up getting hurt in sports that have a lot of physical contact.
