A Lehigh Valley police chief admitted stealing thousands in municipal founds. Now his former employer wants to cut his pension

Hellertown Council plans to strip former police Chief Robert W. Shupp of his public pension for stealing thousands of dollars in borough funds.

Borough manager Cathy Hartranft said council is expected to act on three items as part of a resolution on council’s Monday night agenda. They are:

  • that Shupp’s pension is forfeited because of his conviction for crimes related to public employees;
  • that his accrued defined pension benefit be forfeited retroactive to his March guilty plea; and
  • that pension contributions made by Shupp be returned without interest.

Hartranft said an actuary for the borough has been directed to calculate the amounts related to Shupp’s pension and his contributions. The calculation should be presented during a May 27 police pension committee, she said.
