Severe storms are possible later today and could bring damaging winds and flooding downpours

A hot and humid Tuesday has the potential to end on a stormy note, with the chance for some gusty storms and localized flooding later Tuesday afternoon and evening.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for most of the area for this afternoon and evening. Given the high humidity, any storms that develop have the potential to produce 1-2 inches of rain er hours, and some localized flooding.

In addition, the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has most of the area in a “slight” risk, a 2 out of 5 on the severe potential scale, for later today. Any severe storms that do develop have the capability of producing damaging wind gusts and hail. The tornado threat with any storms is very low, however.

The most likely time for storms to develop is from mid-afternoon through early to mid-evening, or roughly from 2pm to 9pm. If conditions are favorable for storms to develop, a severe thunderstorm watch could be issued to further highlight the potential. If severe storms have developed and there is an imminent threat, a warning will be issued.
