Venturing beyond Muhlenberg’s campus, Sonia Wold ‘27 led a discussion-based food networking program titled, Sabor de Allentown. Through this program, students were able to visit Latin-owned restaurants in Allentown all throughout October.
Wold was inspired by the community immigration discussion hosted by the Spanish department and Spanish Professor Erika Sutherland on Feb. 10, 2025, which featured attorneys Katie Albarelli and Elliot Love, as well as paralegal Leslie Hernández. After this event Wold proposed a program as part of her independent research for her Dana Scholars Program Mentorship that fosters conversation around immigration and strengthens connections between the campus and the community.
With the help of Eveily Freeman, the associate director for the Office of Community Engagement, and under the mentorship of Beth Halpern, the director of the Office of Community Engagement, Wold received a $500 grant to fund Sabor de Allentown, or “Flavor of Allentown” in English This grant funded transportation and provided all the students with $20 for food…
