Quakertown Police Chief Scott McElree is out on leave after he was involved in a physical confrontation with teen protesters where he alleges he was injured, according to authorities.
McElree, 72, who has served as both chief and borough manager since 2007, has been under fire with calls for him to step down following the police response to a Feb. 20 protest involving at least 35 Quakertown students that turned violent. The student protest was against tactics used by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
Quakertown solicitor Peter Nelson confirmed in a Feb. 27 email that McElree is out on workers’ compensation leave. He didn’t immediately response to an email asking who was overseeing the police department and borough affairs in his absence…
