Attorney General Investigates Death After Franklin Township Police Encounter

The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability is investigating the death of Steven Fitzpatrick, 61, of Pittstown, who died after a March 10, 2026 encounter with police in Franklin Township, Hunterdon County. According to the preliminary report, officers responded to a 911 call about a family dispute involving a possible firearm threat. When officers detained Mr. Fitzpatrick, he experienced a medical episode. He was taken to Hunterdon Medical Center and later pronounced dead on March 15, 2026. The investigation into the circumstances and cause of death is ongoing, as required by state law for any death occurring during a police encounter.
