Emergency crews respond to mountain brush fire in Carbon County

LEHIGH GAP, Pa. – Emergency crews are battling a developing brush fire in a mountainous area north of the Appalachian Trail late Sunday morning.

911 dispatchers say the initial call reporting the fire came in at approximately 10:15 a.m. The blaze is located between the Pennsylvania Turnpike and the Lehigh Gap, south of Palmerton.

Officials say because the fire is located near the top of the mountain, access has been challenging. As of 11:20 a.m., crews were only just reaching the scene. Firefighters plan to assess the fire determining the next steps in containment.
