Braves’ relief pitchers among the best in the league

Expectation were high for the Braves this year. Many expected another World Series appearance was in the cards. That tone has changed since the season open. There is still time for the defending champs to right the ship, but it has not been pretty early on.

The same can not be said for the Braves’ relief pitchers this season. The two that really stand out, Kenley Jansen and A.J. Minter. Only two teams in the NL, the Dodgers (.201) and the Mets (.203), have a lower BAA than the Braves relievers (.212). The Mets are also the only team to record more strikeouts per nine innings (11.1) than the Braves have this season (10.9).

A.J. Minter has been the most impressive. Minter, who in the last three years was demoted and sent to the Gwinnett Stripers in 2021 and in 2019. He now has 22 strikeouts in just 14.2 innings pitched. For reference that’s as many K’s as Ian Anderson has on the season in about half the innings.

Add in Charlie Morton who seems to be rounding into form after a stellar performance on Saturday, the Braves have a very strong pitching group, which could keep them afloat while the rest of the team knocks off the championship hangover.
