Explore The History of Moonshining At Savoy Auto Museum

The history of moonshining in the U.S. is one of nerve, speed and lore. And the storied history of the automobile itself and moonshining during prohibition are inextricably tied. So much so that it’s where stock car racing and NASCAR were born.

There’s a new exhibit at The Savoy Automobile Museum in Cartersville that showcases the souped up moonshining cars of yesteryear, and provides a special glimpse into this fascinating period of our history.

For those interested in learning a lot more, there’s even a special evening event planned to take you even deeper into the story of the ‘shine.

The Savoy Automobile Museum’s Moonshine Runners exhibit runs from July 9th to November 3rd. This is one of many exhibits that Savoy rotates throughout the year showcasing unique time periods or people in our nation’s automobile history. Other exhibitions include Rad Cars of Savoy, Movie Cars, Women in Motorsports and more.

Savoy has this to say about the Moonshiner Runners exhibit.

“During the prohibition era, bootleggers would modify cars and trucks for power, speed, and stability to transport illegal liquors in hopes of outrunning the law. This exhibition will feature examples of these early-era hotrods.”
