Cobb County Man Convicted for Involvement in Fatal Street Race That Claimed Teen’s Life

In a sobering conclusion to a case that has weighed heavy on the community of Cobb County, Caleb Hasty has been convicted for his involvement in a street race that cost a teenager his life. According to a report by Cobb County Courts, Hasty faces 12 months with six months to be served in custody after a jury found him guilty of reckless driving and speeding. The August 26, 2023 incident saw Hasty and Garrett Betts racing after leaving a car show, reaching egregious speeds of over 100 mph in a zone designated for 45 mph, which ultimately led to the tragic death of 15-year-old Ryan Huckeba.

Huckeba, who was ejected from the vehicle following a crash, was pronounced dead at the scene, and footage from the area confirmed the duo’s reckless actions. After stopping at a light on the East-West Connector, they tore off as soon as it turned green. Surveillance footage later showed how both drivers accelerated heavily in tandem through the suburban road. Throughout the ordeal, Superior Court Judge Ann B. Harris has seen to the case’s conclusion, as reported by the courts’ press release.

The deadly crash unfolded when Betts, attempting to navigate a curve in his Mustang, lost control and spun out into a horrifying series of events.
