Marietta Woman Accused of Animal Cruelty

Deasia Ashante Bass of Marietta is charged with failing to provide adequate food or water for a dog between Jan. 10 and Feb. 8 at an apartment at 1155-3 W. Commons in Marietta, within the Sedgefield Apartments complex, according to an arrest warrant from the Cobb County Police Department.

Bass intentionally rationed the dog’s food for a period of 30 days and said the dog’s condition began to worsen at the beginning of January. Animal Control seized the dog on Feb. 8. The dog weighed 28 pounds on Feb. 8 and was up to 54 pounds by April 30 after Animal Control staff provided it with a regular feeding. There were no diagnoses to explain the dog’s extreme weight change other than a lack of an adequate food supply. The dog was rated a 1 out of 9 on the body condition system. A level 1 is described as: “too thin: ribs, lumbar vertebrae, pelvic bones and all bony prominences evidence from a distance; no discernable body fat; obvious loss of muscle mass,” according to the warrant…
