Advocates call for release of journalist in ICE custody over bond issue after his arrest at protest

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Attorneys for an Atlanta-area Hispanic journalist currently behind bars at a federal immigration detention center say a bond issue is at the center of his prolonged imprisonment.

Mario Guevara, the founder of Spanish-language MG News, was arrested on June 14 while he was covering a protest in DeKalb County. Guevara stepped off a curb onto the street as police were clearing the area, prompting his arrest. A live stream from Guevara’s phone – and police body camera – captured the arrest.

He was initially charged with unlawful assembly, obstruction of a law enforcement officer, and pedestrian on or along the roadway in DeKalb County, but the charges were dropped soon after. Gwinnett County also dropped unrelated tragic charges against him…
