LILBURN, GEORGIA — Gwinnett County Police are asking for the public’s help in finding a suspect accused of using a fraudulent cashier’s check worth nearly $14,000 to purchase a vehicle through Facebook Marketplace.
How the Fraud Unfolded
Investigators say 33-year-old Anthony Sherlock met with a seller on Sept. 5 to buy a 2016 Audi. The transaction took place at a Chase Bank on Lawrenceville Highway in Lilburn, where Sherlock allegedly presented a cashier’s check for $13,999.
Bank staff later determined the check was altered and refused to release the funds, leaving the victim without payment for the car.
Earlier Meeting Raised No Suspicion
Police say Sherlock had initially met with the seller two days before at a RaceTrac gas station on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Duluth to inspect the vehicle. The seller believed the deal was legitimate until the check was flagged as fake.
Suspect Description
Sherlock is described as a Black male, about 5-foot-9, weighing 155 pounds. After the fraudulent transaction, the victim attempted to contact him, but Sherlock allegedly blocked all messages and social media communication.
