Truck driver charged in I-85 crash that killed Gwinnett family

A truck driver from Gainesville is facing charges stemming from a six-vehicle accident that resulted in the deaths of eight people from the same Gwinnett County family.

The Georgia State Patrol said Kane Aaron Hammock, 33, faces 12 charges stemming the accident, which occurred on Monday on I-85 north in Jackson County. The charges include eight counts of second degree vehicular homicide, one count of second degree feticide by vehicle, one count of following too closely, one count of no registration and one count of driver to exercise due care.

“The investigation revealed that a semi-trailer was following too closely and struck the rear of a 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan,” the State Patrol said in a statement on Tuesday. “This caused a chain reaction involving the van and four additional vehicles. After impact, the Dodge van became engulfed in flames along with the tractor-trailer.”…
