Gwinnett County police have launched a new program to deter young people from using guns, and at the same time honor a fallen police officer who was killed in the line of duty seven years ago.
The police department launched Toney’s Program in September in partnership with the Gwinnett County Juvenile Court, Child Advocacy and Juvenile Services, the Administrative Office of the Courts and View Point Health. The program is named for Officer Antwan Toney, who was shot and killed by a gun-wielding teen in the Snellville area in October 2018.
“Toney’s Program is geared toward juveniles charged with first time or minor handgun offenses,” Cpl. Angela Carter said. “Participants are ordered to complete a seven-week curriculum followed by three months of continued mentorship. Each juvenile is paired with a volunteer mentor who provides ongoing support, encouragement and accountability as the youth works toward building a safer, crime free lifestyle.”…
