A software update has been announced and local lawmakers are calling for the cars to be pulled from the streets of Atlanta after multiple reports have been documented of Waymo driverless cars going around school busses.
In videos shared by Atlanta Public Schools, the driverless cars can be seen ignoring the stop signs and flashing lights on busses on six occasions this fall, 11Alive reports. No accidents have been reported so far.
Waymo previously announced a software update aimed at increasing the safety of the vehicles around busses, among other updates, but incidents have continued to occur in other cities like Austin, Texas, after the update took place, according to a letter from their school district. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been investigated the cases.
In Georgia, state Sen. Rick Williams, who co-wrote Addy’s Law which increased penalties for passing school buses, told 11Alive he won’t wait for the next legislative session to begin working on new laws that could address autonomous vehicle concerns.
Waymo safety officials said the company would issue a voluntary software recall to make necessary fixes, although “Waymo experiences twelve times fewer injury crashes involving pedestrians than human drivers,” the company said in a statement to news outlets…
