Efforts to close homeless encampments will start running out of money unless HUD releases $14.4 million

ATLANTA — As Atlanta prepares for the global spotlight of the World Cup, housing advocates warn a key source of federal funding meant to move people out of encampments and into stable homes is at risk — caught between court orders and shifting federal policy.

At issue is federal funding designated for permanent supportive housing. In Atlanta, the expected grant is $14.4 million. The money helps pay for what’s called Continuum of Care. The largest portion of that money is going toward long-term housing and services for people experiencing homelessness who also have disabilities or serious mental health conditions.
