EXPLORING GWINNETT’S HISTORY: The Civil War secession of Gwinnett County

Happy New Year from the Gwinnett Historical Society. During December, the Gwinnett Historical Society took a break from our usual fare and instead focused on Pearl Harbor Day and Christmas.

Before that, we focused on the county’s founding in the early 1800s, then the Antebellum Period, where we discussed the county’s culture before the American Civil War.

Most of us studied the American Civil War in school. We remember names like Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, William H. Carney, Frederick Douglas, Harriet Tubman; issues like enslavement and state sovereignty; and battles like Gettysburg, Vicksburg, and Atlanta…
