The City of Milton Fire Department in Georgia shared a heartwarming story involving Misty, a 30-year-old mare, who had been discovered near a creek barely able to move. Because of how she slipped near the wet creek bank, the rescue attempts would be extremely difficult and complicated.

The rescue of Misty exemplifies how our firefighters connect and serve both animals and humans alike. Misty needed help, and the team never backed down for a second.

It had been early on Wednesday morning when the Milton Fire Department’s Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue (TLAER) were notified and asked to respond to help Misty at The Painted Horse Winery and Vineyards. Misty had fallen down a soggy creek bank after the ground gave out in what appeared to have been a slippery mess.

Firefighter Vincent Rosenberger had a special connection with Misty. As a child, Misty had been the horse responsible for his first riding lessons. As he approached the aged mare, his kindness and loyalty warmed hearts when he sat by her side and gently held her head – all the while comforting her with gentle words and hugs. The two waited together until the veterinarian arrived to give her medication to keep her calm.

The TLAER team used a slide transfer and a concerted effort to help Misty get to higher and drier ground.

The crew had their A‑structure set up; specialized gear for large‑animal rescues. Fortunately, it wasn’t needed for this rescue.

Once she was safely on more stable ground, they gave her food and water, and then the team helped Misty get back on her feet.

Before long Misty was able to stand up on her own.

Vincent didn’t leave Misty’s side until she slowly walked back to the farm to be reunited with her 12-year-old son – Rodeo.

Even through her scary experience, Misty remains quite the brave mare. As reported, her vitals appear to be good and her prognosis is promising…
