AROUND TOWN: Gwinnett commissioner speaks out on animal sanctuary issue

Supporters of the Yellow River Wildlife Sanctuary have weighed in on residences that have been proposed to be built a few hundred feet away from the sanctuary, and the developer has also weighed in.

Now, Gwinnett County Commissioner Ben Ku is offering his own insight on the debate, although he’s not taking one side or the other on the matter.

Ku issued a statement on the debate on Monday, saying there was confusion in the community as to his role in the rezoning process. Ku said he is not the property owner or developer, and that Middleburg Properties — which is the actual developer in this case — is going through the same process any other rezoning applicant must go through. That means it must go through the county’s Planning Commission, which will hold a public hearing in May, before it reaches Ku and the rest of the Board of Commissioners at a later date…
