Burn bans spread as Northeast Georgia sees worst drought in decade

As wildfires rage across South Georgia and the state sees its worst drought in more than a decade, burn bans are continuing to be implemented, now including counties in Northeast Georgia.

The entire Northeast Georgia region is under “Extreme Drought” status from the U.S. Drought Monitor, the second-worst drought level issued by the monitor. Forecaster Vaughn Smith with the National Weather Service (NWS) in Peachtree City says it’s been more than 10 years since the region has seen this level of drought.

“We haven’t seen a drought like this since about 2011, 2012 or so,” Smith said.

Smith said the good news, for now, is that it does appear that rain is on the way soon…
