AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – An active weather situation is expected later this afternoon and evening, as we prepare for the possibility of strong to severe thunderstorms across the Texas Panhandle.
We have lots of moisture and warm temperatures across the region, and the upper-level elements are also coming together to help create today’s severe weather environment.
Our main concern for storms that develop this afternoon will be large hail, damaging winds, and localized street flooding. The tornado threat remains low at this time, but it cannot be completely ruled out.
SPC has placed the eastern two-thirds of the NewsChannel10 viewing area in a level 2 out of 5, slight risk for severe weather this afternoon. In terms of specifics regarding the hazards mentioned above, ping-pong ball-size ball (1.50 inches in diameter) and wind gusts upwards of 75 mph are likely with today’s storms. If we get any discrete cells to form, we could see hail 2+ inches in diameter.
Storm initiation is expected to begin around 3 pm and will last until early Saturday morning. Storms will develop in the central Panhandle and track towards the east throughout the course of the evening. Amarillo could see a few scattered storms during the early evening hours. We encourage everyone to stay tuned for updates as the situation unfolds. Have a plan of action ready to go, incase your area gets placed under a warning.
