Texas storms could bring torrential rain. Here’s where

As scattered showers continue to develop across parts of Texas this week, a new round of storms in the Texas Panhandle could bring flash flooding and torrential rain, according to the National Weather Service in Amarillo.

The weather agency says showers and storms are expected to hit the western and central Panhandles from Wednesday, September 23, through Thursday night, September 24. Peak rainfall is forecast to arrive on Wednesday evening, and there is currently a medium flash flood risk in the forecast impact zone, with areas west of Amarillo toward the Oklahoma border facing the highest risk until later this week.

What time will the Texas Panhandle see torrential rainfall?

Towns like Dalhart and Adrian are starting the morning with a near-50% chance of precipitation, with many other areas reaching 60-75% odds by 6 p.m. Those risks then rise to an 80-90% probability of rain in the late hours and into Thursday.

Dalhart, Dumas, Hereford, Amarillo and Borger have the highest chance of flash flooding Wednesday evening. The “most likely” timing for those impacts is between 4 p.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. Thursday. During that time, NWS Amarillo says locals could see as much as one to three inches of rain per hour, lightning and thunderstorms.
