Another slaughter surprise, but in the opposite direction from the surprise during the week of Aug. 29. At 304,122 during the week of Aug. 29, steer slaughter posted the highest weekly total since the week of Sept. 14, 2024. With the kill this week at 484,000 head, the steer slaughter estimate fell to 260,876, which wasn’t as low as the spring numbers. Since the first of the year, total steer slaughter is 552,000 head below last year.
Move over to the right and look at the heifer slaughter chart. At 134,500 head, this week’s heifer slaughter is the lowest non-holiday slaughter since May 9, 2020, during the COVID pandemic. We suspect this week’s decline won’t be made up next week, but it should be by the end of the week of Oct. 9…
