One of Amarillo’s most loved convenience stores is Pak-A-Sak. It’s been a staple in the Texas Panhandle since 1978. It was a place to go to grab a Coke (yes, Coke, even though I was always getting Dr. Pepper. I’m Texan). It was a stop for me as a teenager before my friends and I hit the drag or headed to church.
Why Are Pak-A-Sak Stores Closing?
As an adult, it was my go-to place to get a tea, and most recently to grab a Cake Company fried pie. I was heartbroken when it was announced in August that Pak-A-Sak was sold to Casey’s General Store. A local staple is leaving, and an out-of-state company is moving into our beloved Pak-A-Sak. That change is happening a lot faster than anticipated.
As store transitions to Casey’s begin this week and continue through mid November, we are so thankful that so many of our store team members will be continuing into this next chapter. You can look forward to seeing those same warm, familiar faces you have come to know and love over the years. – Pak-A-Sak

What Does This Mean for Locally Owned Convenience Stores?
It will be a big adjustment for those of us who have grown up on Pak-A-Sak or for those who used it as the go-to convenience store. For some, it was a big deal to shop local, and now we have one less set of convenience stores that are locally owned.
