St. Ann’s opens the Market on Tierra Blanca food pantry

CANYON, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — St. Ann’s Catholic Church opened a full-service food pantry serving all of Randall County, Northern Swisher County and Northern Deaf Smith County.

The food pantry primarily serves families, seniors and West Texas A&M University students.

“Our mission is to serve the underserved in the community, particularly the food insecure, those that really have a need,” said Simon Leech president of the Market on Tierra Blanca. “It was a vision of some folks at our parish. We wanted to be able to provide that support to our community, there really hasn’t been a market at this scale in the Canyon community.”

The food pantry had a soft opening in November before opening to the public earlier this month. Director of the Market on Tierra Blanca, Glenn Backus shared clients can submit applications online to have officials receive all required information.

“Our clients when they come in the door, we’ll get them signed in, and they get a certain number of pantry credits based on the number of dependents,” said Backus. “Then they can take those credits, think of it as dollars and they can spend those as they like, throughout our pantry. Every month those credits reset. So, they’ll start over the next month.”
