Ogallala Commons opens registration for ‘Stewarding Our Water Conference’ in Amarillo

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – Ogallala Commons, Inc. announced that registration has opened for the “Stewarding Our Water Future” conference, set for March 21-22 at the Amarillo Area Foundation’s Harrington Center for Philanthropy, aiming to shift the public conversation about groundwater depletion in a solution-oriented direction.

Organizers with the conference noted that its aim comes with the realization of depleting irrigation and domestic well levels and the continued diminishing of the Ogallala Aquifer System giving rise to discouragement and doubt for the future of groundwater in the Texas High Plains. The conference will aim to highlight hope amid the depletion of groundwater in the region and innovative solutions for the water supply.

Ogallala Commons Deputy Director Darryl Birkenfeld said the aim of the conference will be “to expand the stakeholder coalition focused on improving the water realities we live with and leave for future generations.”

“As our region experiences more frequent droughts and torrential rains,” noted Birkenfeld, “much more can be done to increase water infiltration in the souls of our agricultural lands and to improve water retention in our cityscapes. This conference will equip attendees with information and pathways to renew our degraded water cycle.”
